What was important to owner of “Riga Met production” when building their new production building in Latvia?

Situation and challenge

How to use low system temperatures for the heat transfer into the building.

“We were planning a new non-residential building for our new metal production line in Rezekne, Latvia. Our goal was to use energy saving heat pumps with low system temperatures, but due to the weight of our production machines there were restrictions to the possible load to the floor.

Additionally we were looking for user-friendly solutions with a minimum effort to maintain.
Our planner suggested a passive heating system installed at the ceiling level.

Our solution

Passive heating panels with an optimum in efficiency instead of energy wasting warm air heating systems.

“At our place, the passive heating system through the radiant ceiling panels provided an optimum in energy efficiency. We were able to use a heat pump system with very low system temperatures even in our cold climate in Latvia. The radiant ceiling panels provide a pleasant and draft-free indoor climate for our staff working at the production lines. One additional advantage is that we can use this system for cooling if needed as we are using reversible heat pumps. In comparison to our old buildings we save in energy and maintenance costs".

How things have improved for Riga Met:
"Installing a ceiling panel system in our new production building fulfilled and surpasses all our requirements.
We have found a solution which can be installed at the ceiling and can be perfectly integrated into the building. There is now a pleasant indoor climate without drafts as we don’t use a heating system that circulates air around. Our workers feel comfortable and are not disturbed by cold spots anymore, as the system guarantees an even temperature within the building. Even by opening the loading doors this disturbance is not as it is in our other production plants. We save a lot in energy as we are using high efficiency heat pumps and can operate the radiant ceiling panels with low temperatures.

The installation of Zehnder low temperature radiant ceiling panels required some more investment from us but from past experience, this system will pay for itself within 2 to 3 years".

How to design a low energy system without performance losses

The property, a new industrial production building in Rezekne, Latvia, has to be designed. The challenge here was to use heat pumps with low temperatures with an efficient heat transfer. Additionally we had to think about:

  1. Loads to the floor
  2. Optional cooling function
  3. Protection of the machines
  4. Minimise draught disturbances
  5. Saving energy

“I first learned about radiant ceiling panels during a seminar. Talking to experts, looking into the technology and into existing projects gave me the idea to use this system. The concept included high efficiency heat pumps, which allowed us to design an efficient system with an optional cooling function which we were looking for”.

“I am now convinced of the radiant ceiling panels.”
The architect's solution was to use a warm air heating system:
“My suggestion was to instead use the ceiling panel technology as there are several advantages over the other system. The radiant ceiling panels are to be used with heat pumps. Specific to our building we were able to ensure the machines were working properly at even temperature levels. As a benefit we have now a cooling option. What we learned even after one heating period that the system performs exceptionally in terms of energy consumption”
